About FSU Hockey

History of FSU Hockey

The start of the FSU Ice Hockey Club was in 1997.  Since then it has been an organization that has been run by the students, the players on the team.  Two of the “creators” were Carlos Landrian, who was also the first coach, and Eric Campailla.  The team began play at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center, near campus.

They continued play there until the 2000-01 season, when the team was forced to hold their home games at Jacksonville Ice due to the loss of ice at the civic center.  The following season the team again relocated, this time to the RDV Sportsplex in Orlando, where they played until 2008 when Jacksonville Ice became the home of Noles Hockey once again.

In early 2011, the Ice Noles announced that their home for the 2011-12 season would be at the new Columbus Civic Center in Columbus, GA.  The new, modern facility opened in April,  2011.

About FSU Hockey

To be a member of this prestigious program, one must maintain a 2.0 grade
average while being a full time student at FSU.  Since the team is a club sport,
the university provides only minimal amount of money compared to a large
budget needed to operate a hockey team.

Team members must come up with the extra money necessary to travel to
Jacksonville , the team’s home ice.  The other games are normally within a
five-hour drive of Tallahassee.  The team has recently traveled to Clemson
University, the University of Alabama, the University of South Carolina and LSU
for games.  There are normally multiple games played during a weekend, leaving
the players no choice but to rent hotel rooms for two nights.

The students run the program themselves, meaning that they pay out of their own
pockets for transportation, hotels and equipment.  There are typically between 18
and 20 regular season games, none of which are in Tallahassee.

The team attempts to raise additional funds through merchandise sales and
donations.  Two golf tournaments have been held in 2007 and 2008 raising over
$5000.

On April 6, 2010, Seminole Ice Hockey was named SPORTS CLUB OF THE YEAR at the annual Leadership Awards Banquet at FSU.  In addition to this honor the club was also chosen as the prestigious Vires Award winner, recognizing the student organization that most exemplifies determination and perseverance during the year.
